Spot Removal Steps

1. Address spills as soon as possible. Many carpets today include stain-resistant treatments that may help reduce absorption from common spills. Prompt attention may improve the chances of reducing visible spotting. Results can vary depending on the carpet material, stain type, and how long the spill remains on the carpet.

2. Blot liquids using a dry, white, absorbent cloth or plain white paper towels without printed ink.

3. Avoid scrubbing the area. Aggressive scrubbing may affect carpet fibers or spread the spill further. Use a blotting motion with a dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much moisture as possible. For semi-solid material, gently lift debris using a spoon or dull utensil. Dry solids can be loosened and vacuumed before treating the affected area.

4. Pre-test any spot removal product in a less visible area before applying it to the affected spot. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and observe for any color transfer, discoloration, or changes to the carpet fibers before broader application.

5. Apply a small amount of the selected cleaning solution to a white cloth and work gently into the affected area.

6. Work from the outside edges of the spill toward the center to help reduce spreading. Continue blotting as needed using a clean cloth or towel.

7. Continue using the selected cleaning solution only as directed and only while transfer from the spill continues to appear on the cloth.

8. Be patient. Some spots may require repeated treatment attempts depending on the material and severity of the spill.

9. Rinse the affected area thoroughly with cold water when appropriate for the carpet type and blot dry to help remove excess cleaning solution.

10. Apply a layer of white paper towels over the damp area and place a flat, heavy object on top to help absorb remaining moisture. Replace towels as needed until the area is dry.
